The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Oyo State Chapter, has filed a notice of appeal and a motion for stay of execution against the recent Court of Appeal judgment on the use of hijab at the International School, University of Ibadan (ISI), urging the school management to suspend implementation of its directive pending the determination of the fresh application.
The organisation, in a statement issued on Friday by its General Secretary, Mallam Ibrahim Agunbiade, expressed concern over the school’s notice that female students would no longer be permitted to wear the hijab with their uniforms from Monday, July 6, 2026, following the appellate court’s ruling delivered on Friday.
MURIC maintained that while it respects the judiciary and remains committed to the rule of law, the legal battle over the rights of Muslim female students to wear the hijab has not been concluded.
According to the group, its incorporated trustees had, on the same day the judgment was delivered, filed and served a notice of appeal as well as a motion for stay of execution and injunction pending appeal before the appropriate court.
The Islamic rights organisation argued that the fresh legal processes make it inappropriate for the school authorities to proceed with enforcing the directive before the court determines the pending application.
“The issues surrounding the rights of Muslim female students to wear the hijab remain subject to further judicial consideration,” the group stated, warning that any hurried implementation of the judgment could prejudice ongoing proceedings and heighten tensions within the school community.
MURIC appealed to the management of the International School, University of Ibadan to exercise restraint and avoid actions capable of rendering the pending motion nugatory, stressing that peaceful coexistence and the protection of fundamental rights can only be guaranteed through strict adherence to due process.
The organisation also urged Muslim parents, guardians, students and members of the Muslim community to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding, insisting that there should be no confrontation or disruption of public order over the matter.
It expressed confidence in the judicial process, saying all parties would be accorded a fair hearing in line with the provisions of the Constitution and the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Reaffirming its commitment to what it described as the constitutional rights of Muslim students, MURIC vowed to continue pursuing the case through all lawful legal channels until justice is achieved.
The group further prayed for national peace and unity, while calling for divine guidance and protection for Nigerian children amid the controversy.
