The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has called for the immediate removal of President Bola Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, over allegations linking him to the controversial Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC), an agency the Presidency insists does not exist.
In a statement dated 3 July 2026 and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the opposition party described the allegations surrounding the purported agency as serious and called for an independent investigation.
According to the NDC, allegations made by Prince Matthew Adeniyi Adeyemi, who claims to be the Director-General of the PFIPC, raise significant concerns about transparency, accountability and governance under the Tinubu administration.
The party alleged that the purported agency was used to siphon public funds with the alleged involvement of senior government officials.
Among the claims cited by the NDC were allegations that the PFIPC received allocations in the 2026 Appropriation Act and operated several accounts with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), including a domiciliary account, a Pound Sterling account and a Treasury Single Account (TSA).
The party questioned how an agency publicly disowned by the Presidency could allegedly establish accounts within Nigeria’s official financial system.
“The NDC finds it deeply troubling that an agency the Presidency claims does not exist could open multiple high-level financial accounts at the apex bank,” the statement read.
The party also questioned whether the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation processed forged documentation, demanding an urgent explanation from the Federal Government.
Beyond the financial allegations, the NDC expressed concern over claims that the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation approved 314 staff positions for the purported agency.
According to the party, such administrative approvals would have been difficult to obtain without the knowledge of senior government officials.
The statement further referenced allegations attributed to Adeyemi, including claims that Gbajabiamila demanded 48 per cent of the agency’s take-off grant, reportedly amounting to more than ₦27.3 billion.
The NDC also cited allegations that Adeyemi fraudulently secured his appointment through the payment of ₦600 million, of which ₦400 million was allegedly paid through intermediaries, while ₦200 million remained outstanding.
The party stressed that these allegations remain unproven but argued that they warrant an independent and transparent investigation.
In addition, the NDC raised concerns over the death of Babatunde Tanimola, described as an intermediary between Adeyemi and the Chief of Staff, who reportedly died in a fire incident at a hotel in Utako, Abuja, in October 2025.
It also referenced Adeyemi’s claims that he had survived multiple assassination attempts and was facing threats to his life.
Based on these developments, the opposition party demanded the immediate removal of Gbajabiamila from office to allow for what it described as a fair and unbiased investigation.
It also urged President Tinubu to establish an independent investigative panel to examine all allegations relating to the PFIPC, including its alleged operations, financial transactions, budgetary allocations, staff approvals and banking activities.
The party further called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Nigeria Police Force to investigate the allegations, while requesting witness protection for Adeyemi.
“The NDC will not accept the usual tactic of issuing a mere defensive press release from the Presidency as a deflective ploy. Nigerians deserve to know the truth through a transparent process that promotes fairness and justice,” the statement added.
Presidency Rejects Allegations
The Presidency has, however, strongly rejected Adeyemi’s claims, insisting that the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council does not exist under the Tinubu administration.
According to the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, investigations showed that Adeyemi allegedly forged a presidential appointment letter purportedly signed by Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila and falsely presented himself as the head of a non-existent government agency.
The Presidency also alleged that Adeyemi operated numerous bank accounts, some reportedly opened in the names of fictitious government agencies.
It disclosed that Gbajabiamila had petitioned security agencies in October 2025 over what was described as an elaborate forgery and impersonation scheme, resulting in criminal charges being filed against Adeyemi and two other suspects.
The Presidency further stated that both the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission had previously raised concerns about the purported agency, maintaining that no such organisation exists within the Federal Government.
Despite the government’s position, Adeyemi has continued to insist that both his appointment and the activities of the PFIPC are genuine.
The allegations and counterclaims have heightened public interest in the matter, with growing calls from political stakeholders for a thorough investigation to establish the facts surrounding the controversy.
