The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) have agreed to deepen collaboration on climate services, climate data management, early warning systems and climate resilience, as both institutions move to strengthen Nigeria’s response to the growing impacts of climate change.
The commitment was reached during a courtesy visit by the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, to the Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change Secretariat, Dr. Tenioye Majekodunmi, in Abuja, a statement said on Tuesday.
During the meeting, Prof. Anosike underscored NiMet’s strategic role as Nigeria’s custodian of long-term meteorological records, explaining that the agency provides the baseline atmospheric data required for climate trend analysis, climate risk assessments and the development of reliable climate projections.
He stressed that stronger collaboration between NiMet and the NCCC would enhance the co-development of climate projections, improve the country’s early warning systems, standardize climate data and promote joint research that would support evidence-based climate policies and informed decision-making.
According to him, closer institutional cooperation would enable policymakers to access localized, science-based information needed to implement effective climate adaptation and mitigation strategies while improving the translation of global climate projections into practical advisories for communities and climate-sensitive sectors such as agriculture, water resources, health and disaster risk management.
Prof. Anosike also highlighted the importance of quality meteorological and climate data in attracting international climate finance, noting that both institutions could jointly develop funding proposals to support climate resilience programmes, strengthen early warning systems and expand climate infrastructure across the country.
Responding, the Director-General of the NCCC Secretariat, Dr. Tenioye Majekodunmi, commended NiMet for its sustained contributions to weather forecasting and climate services in Nigeria, describing the agency as a critical partner in achieving the country’s climate goals.
He expressed the Council’s readiness to strengthen collaboration with NiMet in advancing climate science, improving climate information services and supporting national efforts to build resilience against climate-related risks.
As part of the renewed partnership, both institutions agreed to formalize their collaboration through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which will provide a framework for sustained cooperation in climate services, climate data management, climate research, early warning systems, capacity development and other areas of mutual interest.
The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of both agencies to advancing Nigeria’s climate policy agenda through stronger institutional collaboration, improved climate services and science-driven actions aimed at protecting lives, livelihoods and the environment from the impacts of climate change.
