“Remember Who Fought for Your Freedom” – Tinubu Blasts South Africa Over Xenophobic Attack$

- He also reminded South Africa that its freedom was achieved through the sacrifices of several African nations, including Nigeria, while reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to regional peace and integration.
President Bola Tinubu has condemned the recent xenophobic attacks against Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa, urging African leaders to take a united stand against the violence.
Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima at the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government in Freetown, Sierra Leone, Tinubu described the attacks as unacceptable and revealed that Nigeria had already evacuated more than 1,490 citizens from South Africa in seven batches.
The President backed Ghana’s call for ECOWAS to jointly condemn the attacks and present the matter at the next African Union summit. He also reminded South Africa of the support it received from African nations during the anti-apartheid struggle.
“South Africa should be reminded that the freedom it currently enjoys is the result of the sacrifices and liberation efforts of African countries, including Nigeria.”
Tinubu added that Africa must speak with one voice against xenophobia.
“Nigeria condemns, in the strongest terms, the recent attacks on its citizens and other Africans in the Republic of South Africa.”
He also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to regional peace and security, pledging support for the proposed ECOWAS Counter Terrorism Force, intelligence sharing, joint security operations, and initiatives to strengthen trade, infrastructure, and digital transformation across West Africa.
