Romania to summon Russian envoy after downing third drone in three days

Romania has said it will summon Russia’s ambassador after its military shot down the third drone in as many days near the NATO member’s border with Ukraine.

Foreign Minister Oana Toiu said on X on Sunday that the ambassador would be summoned over the “repeated violations” of Romanian airspace.

A Romanian F-16 fighter jet shot down the latest drone over the Black Sea five minutes after it entered the country’s airspace on Sunday, Defence Minister Radu Miruta said on Facebook.

President Nicusor Dan said an investigation had identified the drone downed on Friday as a “Shahed model, used by the Russian Federation in its war of aggression against Ukraine”.

Investigations into the drones shot down on Saturday and Sunday were ongoing, he added.

“It is unacceptable and intolerable for the Russian Federation to continue violating Romania’s airspace, which is also the airspace of NATO and the European Union,” Dan said on X.
