The Kamorudeen Makinde-led faction of the Osogbo Progressives Union has denied endorsing any candidate for the August 15, 2026, Osun State governorship election, saying it is still consulting stakeholders across the town on where to tilt its pendulum.
The union’s position was contained in a statement signed by its president on Thursday.
The statement said its position followed reports credited to the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Oyetunji Olanipekun, in which the monarch allegedly said the OPU will support the re-election of the governor.
The statement noted that the union, which is a registered association under the law and has always been operating within the confines of the law, has not taken any position concerning the August 15 election.
“The Union whose sole interest is clothed in any agenda that can collectively bring real development and growth to Osogbo and her people is in a serious marathon of consultation with the elders and community leaders,” it said.
The OPU said the current executive, under Makinde, would not take a hasty decision on an election that affects the collective interest of the town.
It noted that residents respect the leadership precisely because it does not rush to conclusions on sensitive matters.

While acknowledging the Ataoja’s right to his personal views, the union said such opinions must not be presented as the position of the Osogbo people.
“Personal opinion is important to be separated from being taken and presented as a collective decision of the people,” it stated.
The OPU also advised the monarch to remain a father to all residents irrespective of political affiliation, adding that many traditional rulers in Osun avoid being drawn into partisan politics.
The statement called on Osogbo elders to intervene to prevent further public disputes.
