Video: Nigerians Question Neutrality As Lagos Police Commissioner Attends APC City Boy Movement Inauguration

Nigerians have reacted to the presence of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatia, at the inauguration of the City Boy Movement Lagos chapter on Tuesday.

Viral videos circulating on social media show Fatai arriving at the event, where he exchanged pleasantries with members of the City Boy Movement.

Reacting in a post on X, @Codedboy997 said the police commissioner attending a political rally is unconstitutional.

He wrote, “Commissioners of police attending party rallies is totally unconstitutional..unacceptable and shows clear bias..if he provided armed guards to give them security coverage, acceptable..he has more important things to do than attending party rallies.”

Another X user, @ReformerOluseun, said Fatai’s presence at the event suggested that the police officers were not neutral as expected.

“Attended as who? Aren’t police officers supposed to be neutral? Are they now allowed to be partisan in Nigeria?

“Now that police officers started attending political rallies, who will enforce the law when those same politicians abuse power or engage in corruption?

“How do they expect people to trust the police that are seen taking sides politically,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has demanded the immediate suspension of the Lagos Police Commissioner, describing his presence at the event as inappropriate and partisan.

In a post on X, NDC wrote, “We condemn in the strongest terms the appearance of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani, at a partisan event promoting a particular candidate in the upcoming general election,” the opposition party wrote.

“We understand that the rudderless APC-led administrations have no iota of respect for our institutions, but seeing a Commissioner of Police at a partisan event can only point to one thing: He will be biased in the discharge of his duties during the elections.

“We therefore demand that the police authorities immediately suspend and sanction the Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani. We further demand that the Police authorities make a firm commitment to playing a neutral role in the upcoming election.

“That the Police authorities protect voters and supporters of other candidates who are not members of the ruling party. That the Police ensure the safety of the lives and property of all voters, regardless of religion, ethnicity, or party affiliation.”

The NDC also asked the Lagos police commissioner to “tender his resignation immediately for denigrating the institution of the Police”.
