Borno PWDs Laud Zulum For Pushing Disability Rights Bill To Assembly
Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) under the auspicies of Joint National Association of Persons Living with Disabilities ( JNAPWD ) , Borno State chapter, have commended Governor Babagana Umara Zulum for forwarding the Borno State Disability Rights Bill to the State House of Assembly for passage.
The Chairman of JNAPWD in the State, Mallam Mustapha, who made the commendation when they visited the state’s Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Prof Usman Tar, disclosed that the bill has successfully scaled its second reading and is expected to complete the remaining legislative processes before being passed into law and assented to.
According to him, the proposed legislation also provides for the establishment of the Borno State Disability Welfare Board, which will strengthen institutional support for Persons with Disabilities across the state.
The association expressed appreciation to the Borno State Government for its sustained commitment to promoting the rights, welfare and inclusion of Persons with Disabilities.
Speaking earlier, the Commissioner of Information and Internal Security, Prof Tar, reaffirmed Borno State’s commitment to empowering Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) through inclusive policies and programmes aimed at enhancing their welfare and promoting self-reliance.
Prof Tar, who gave the assurance while receiving the leadership of JNAPWD, during the courtesy visit to his office stated that the administration of Governor Zulum remains committed to creating an enabling environment for persons with disabilities by providing the necessary support, opportunities and facilities to improve their socio-economic well-being and ensure their full participation in the development of the state.
The commissioner also reiterated the government’s resolve to advance disability inclusion through legislative reforms, noting that the proposed Disability Rights Bill reflects the administration’s determination to safeguard the rights and welfare of Persons with Disabilities in Borno State.
Present at the meeting were the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Alhaji Aminu Chamalwa; the Director of Administration and Supply, Babagana Mustapha, and other management staff of the ministry.
