Nigerian singer Davido has backed the idea of couples having separate personal bank accounts, saying both men and women should maintain their own finances even while married.

Speaking on The Uncut Podcast, Davido was asked whether women should have secret bank accounts away from their partners. He agreed with the idea but stressed that it should apply to both genders.

“Yeah, I think it’s good. I think, I actually think they should,” Davido said.

The singer explained that couples should maintain personal finances because “you never know” what could happen in the future, adding that both partners should “mount their ground”.

Davido also said he would not necessarily be angry if he discovered that his wife had a secret bank account.

“If I ever found out like my wife had a secret bank account, I’ll not be angry” he said.

He concluded: “I think everybody should have their own.”

His comments have since sparked mixed reactions online, with some users supporting financial independence in marriage while others questioned the idea of keeping finances secret from a spouse.
