The death of veteran actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has triggered an outpouring of grief across Nigeria’s entertainment industry, with many movie and music stars paying tribute to a man they remembered as a father figure, friend and major force in Yoruba cinema.
Ogogo, according to reports, died at about 3 p.m. on Sunday after battling stage-four cancer. He was 66.
His death came just days after his daughters, Kaira and Lima Taiwo, reportedly appealed for medical assistance, revealing that doctors could no longer administer chemotherapy because of his condition.
As news of his death spread, leading figures in the film industry took to social media to mourn the actor, whose name became firmly associated with Yoruba-language cinema.

Ogogo’s Daughter Declines Favours for Movie Roles
Femi Adebayo, one of the major Nollywood stars to react, mourned Ogogo on his Instagram page and paid tribute to the years he spent in the industry.
“Some people leave behind memories. Some leave behind a legacy that time can never erase,” Adebayo wrote.
He thanked the late Ogogo for “the years, the stories, the lessons and the moments” that made audiences fall in love with filmmaking.
Adebayo called him “a true pillar of Yoruba cinema” and said his influence would live on through generations.
“Rest well, Sir Taiwo Hassan. You will forever be Ogogo to us,” he wrote.
‘End of an Era’
Bolaji Amusan, popularly known as Mr Latin, captured the mood among many of Hassan’s colleagues when he opened his tribute with the words: “End of an era.”
Amusan called the late actor “a great icon, a legend and a father to many”, saying Ogogo touched countless hearts and left a lasting imprint on the film industry and culture.
“May his legacy live on forever, and may God grant his family, colleagues and loved ones the strength to bear this painful loss,” he wrote.
He ended his message with a farewell to the actor.
“Rest in peace, Ogogo. Your era may have ended, but your legacy will never die.”
Also, actor Muyiwa Ademola mourned Ogogo as one of the biggest figures the Nigerian film industry had produced.
“Rest well sir T. Ogogo Omo kulodo. One of The Biggest the Nigerian Film Industry ever produced!” Ademola wrote.
He prayed for comfort for the family of Ogogo and those mourning him.
“No one leaves here alive,” Ademola wrote.
Again, Ibrahim Yekini remembered Ogogo as a legend whose work would continue to live in the minds of those who watched him.
“A true legend has gone home,” he wrote.
“Your impact, your talent and the memories you gave us will live on forever.”
Actress Kazeem Atinuke, known as Mama NoNetwork, described Ogogo as more than a colleague.
“Rest in peace our brother, friend, and daddy,” she wrote.
Actor Ladi Folarin on Instagram said he was heartbroken by the news of Ogogo’s death.
“So so sad to see your departure from us, am heartbroken, may your soul rest in peace,” he wrote.
Osupa mourns his ‘Dear Brother’
Fuji music star Saheed Osupa joined the tributes with prayers for Hassan, whom he called his “dear brother”.
“Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un,” Osupa wrote.
He prayed that Ogogo’s shortcomings be forgiven, asking God to grant him eternal rest.
Osupa also prayed for strength for the actor’s family, loved ones and others affected by his death.
“You will forever be remembered,” he wrote.
The mourning also reached beyond the film and music industry.
Nigerian influencer Tunde Ednut on Instagram reacted to the death with a short reflection on life.
“Nothing Dey this life. It is well. May his soul rest in peace,” he wrote.
He said Ogogo’s death had made him think about the struggle for success and the fact that every life eventually comes to an end.
Kemi Olunloyo, who said Ogogo was her friend, recalled her relationship with the late actor and described him as talented and extremely nice.
On Facebook, she said Ogogo had been introduced to her by late actress Bisi Komolafe during her time in Ibadan.
Olunloyo also offered condolences to Ogogo’s family and colleagues, with special words for his daughter, Shakirat.
She said the actor would be remembered for his film talent.
Recent report revealed that Ogogo will be buried in his hometown, Ilaro, Ogun State, on Monday, 24 August, 2026.
A burial announcement by veteran actor Jide Kosoko on Instagram said his remains would be taken to Ilaro on Sunday ahead of the funeral.
Also, the Ilaro Muslim Community announced that the burial prayer would take place at the Asade Agunloye Pavilion Ground at 10 a.m. on Monday.
A laying-in-state ceremony is also scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Pavillon, Ilaro.
Ogogo’s death has now brought the Nigerian entertainment industry together in mourning, with colleagues recalling different sides of the man they knew.
Ogogo, for some, was an industry icon. For others, he was a mentor, brother, father or friend.
In all, these tributes show that the name Ogogo would outlive the man who made it famous.
“You will forever be Ogogo to us,” Adebayo wrote.
