Afrobeats superstar Davido has shared the story behind his uncle, Ademola Adeleke’s decision to pursue the Osun State governorship seat.
The singer made the disclosure during a livestream while celebrating Adeleke’s reported victory in the recently concluded Osun State governorship election.
According to Davido, his late uncle, Isiaka Adeleke, had been expected to become governor of Osun State before his death under circumstances that remained unclear. Following his passing, another candidate was selected to contest the governorship position, eventually leading Ademola Adeleke into the political race.
Speaking about his uncle’s political journey and electoral record, Davido said, “He has never lost an election. From the first election he ever did, he never lost.”
Adeleke first contested the Osun governorship election in 2018 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Although he was initially declared the winner, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) later declared the election inconclusive.
A rerun was subsequently held on September 27, 2018, after which the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Gboyega Oyetola, was declared the winner.
Four years later, Adeleke returned to the governorship race in the July 16, 2022 election and defeated the incumbent, Oyetola. He secured 403,371 votes across 17 local government areas.
Oyetola challenged the outcome of the election through the courts. However, both the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court upheld Adeleke’s victory.
Adeleke was eventually sworn in as the sixth democratically elected governor of Osun State on November 27, 2022, at the Osogbo Township Stadium.
The political battle continued in 2026, with Adeleke seeking another term in office. According to the figures provided, he contested the August 16, 2026 governorship election on the platform of the Accord Party and was declared the winner by INEC after polling 511,067 votes, defeating the APC candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, who secured 444,815 votes.
