INEC Fixes Sept. 19 For Gombe By-Election
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Saturday, September 19, 2026, for the conduct of the by-election into the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency.
The commission announced this on Tuesday in a timetable and schedule of activities released by the Gombe State office.
The election follows the death of the constituency’s representative, Yaya Bauchi Tongo, who died in June after a brief illness.
In a statement dated August 17 and signed by Mohorret Bigun, Public Affairs Officer, on behalf of the Gombe Resident Electoral Commissioner, Umar Mukhtar Gajiram, the bye-election would be conducted in line with Section 76(2) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, and relevant provisions of the Electoral Act.
INEC said the Notice of Election would be published on August 20, while political parties intending to participate are expected to conduct their primaries between August 21 and 25.
The list of nominated candidates will be published on September 8, with campaigns commencing on September 9 and ending on September 17, two days before the election.
The commission urged political parties to adhere to the timetable and conduct their activities in accordance with the law.
It also assured stakeholders across the constituency’s three local government areas, with 903 polling units, of a level playing field and pledged to conduct a free, fair, and inclusive election.
INEC further urged eligible voters to participate actively in the electoral process and exercise their civic responsibilities.
