Kwara’s Linguistic Map: Yoruba Dominates 12 LGAs, Nupe, Baatonum, Bokobaru Hold Their Ground- The Press Nigeria

Kwara State is often described through its rich history, diverse cultures and strategic position between Nigeria’s North and South. But beyond its towns, traditions and political boundaries lies another fascinating identity — its languages.

Across the state’s 16 Local Government Areas, four principal languages stand out, with Yoruba emerging as the dominant language, spoken principally across 12 LGAs.

The distribution places Yoruba at the heart of Kwara’s linguistic identity, accounting for 75 per cent of the state’s LGAs.

The remaining four LGAs reflect the state’s strong cultural diversity, with Nupe serving as the principal language in two LGAs, while Baatonum and Bokobaru each dominate one LGA.

Where the Languages Are Spoken

The Yoruba language is the principal language in Asa, Ekiti, Ifelodun, Ilorin East, Ilorin South, Ilorin West, Isin, Irepodun, Moro, Offa, Oke Ero and Oyun.

In Edu and Pategi, Nupe takes the lead, reflecting the enduring cultural influence of Nupe communities in the riverine and northern parts of the state.

Baruten is predominantly associated with Baatonum, while Bokobaru is listed as the principal language in Kaiama.

A State, Many Voices

The linguistic pattern paints a picture of a state whose identity cannot be reduced to a single language.

From the Yoruba-speaking communities of Ilorin and southern Kwara to the Nupe-speaking areas and the distinct linguistic heritage of Baruten and Kaiama, the state carries a remarkable mixture of cultures within its borders.

For many residents, language is more than a means of communication. It is a vessel for history, identity, customs, traditional knowledge and community heritage.

Kwara’s linguistic map therefore tells a bigger story: a state where different peoples and traditions coexist, while Yoruba remains the principal language across the overwhelming majority of its Local Government Areas.
