A few years ago, Igbo gospel music was mostly sold at the popular Alaba International market in Lagos and Ariaria market in Onitsha.Today, Igbo gospel music is on various streaming apps while the gladiators are smiling to the banks because of improved pay. Igbo gospel music has simply entered a new era. The new generation isn’t just singing in church — they’re on Spotify, TikTok, YouTube, and global playlists. They’re mixing highlife, afro-gospel, worship, and rap, all while singing in Igbo, English, and Pidgin.They became creative by fusing highlife into fusion while making it easy for the Gen Zs to enjoy it. This week, City People’s WOLE ALAKIJA provides a list of some of these hot musicians making waves and money because of their heavy presence on social media.

 

PROSPA OCHIMANA

Igbo worship + highlife. Although, Prospa Ochimana isn’t Igbo, his Igbo version of “Ekwueme” opened the door. Artists like Mercy Chinwo’s Igbo collabo and Sinach’s Igbo singles followed. His music also enjoy massive airplay online.

 

BRODA MIKE

Who started doing Igbo worship medleys on TikTok is the real deal. His song, “Chineke Dalu” hit 8M views and became a wedding anthem for many while he smiled to the bank.

 

MINISTER GUC

GUC is from Port Harcourt but started releasing Igbo versions of ‘All That Matters”and “The Call” in 2022. His Igbo pronunciations made him a favorite in the East. He proved that non-Igbo artists singing Igbo could also blow and he did, bigtime.

 

MOSES BLISS: IGBO GOSPEL PUSH

After “Too Faithful”, blew up, Moses Bliss started including Igbo choruses. His 2023 song “Miracle No Dey Tire Jesus” had an Igbo bridge that dominated TikTok. He also signed Neeja, an Igbo gospel singer, to SpotliteNation.

 

LIMOBLAZE: IGBO GOSPEL

Hip-hop, Afrobeat, Gospel Rap  from Abia State. He started rapping in English but switched to Igbo rap in 2021 with “Jireh (Igbo Remix)”. He’s the first Nigerian gospel artist to chart on Billboard. Now he’s bringing US gospel-rap energy back to Aba and Enugu and many South-East states.

 

I-SPIRIT – THE GROUP

Afro-worship, Igbo + English . A 5-man group from Enugu. They blew up in 2022 with Jesus You Are Here (Igbo Version)”. Their thing is singing in harmony like Boyz II Men but with Igbo proverbs. They now tour US churches with large Igbo population.

 

GREATMAN TAKIT:  AFRO-PRAISE, DANCE

Bayelsa-born but Igbo-speaking. His 2023 hit “Nara Ekele” had a full Igbo version that went viral on dance challenges. Churches in the East now use it mostly for thanksgiving.

 

CHINYERE UDOMA: THE MENTOR, CLASSIC IGBO GOSPEL, HIGHLIFE

She’s not entirely “new” but she’s the godmother. Every new Igbo gospel artist mentions her. In 2021 she did “Nara Ekele” challenge and passed the baton to younger artists.She is one of Igbo ‘s popular artistes.

 

MERCY CHINWO: IGBO AFRO-GOSPEL

From Rivers but speaks fluent Igbo. Her 2022 single “Obinasom (Igbo Version)” made Igbo gospel mainstream in Lagos churches. She’s bringing non-Igbo audiences to Igbo songs. And she is really a big name with an online presence.

 

ESTHER ONYEKA

Worship, Igbo hymns. She is from Anambra. Blew up on TikTok in 2023 singing old Igbo hymns with Piano. Her EP “Chukwu Gi Ka Mma” did 3M streams with zero label. Churches now call her “the new Onyeka Onwenu of gospel.”

 

JUDITH KANAYO

Igbo prophetic worship. Based in Owerri. Known for 1-hour live worship sessions on Facebook. Her song “Aha Gi Di Nma” became the go-to song for prayer meetings for most churches.

 

PRAISE UZOR

From Enugu. Started posting 15-seconds Igbo worship in her room. 2024 song “Obioma” got used by 200,000 TikToks. Now signed to a UK label and she’s doing extremely well with large following online.

 

KOSISOCHUKWU

Rapper from Imo. Does “Igbo gospel drill.” His 2023 track “Onye Nwem” mixed trap beats with Igbo scriptures. Youths in Eastern universities love him to bits.

 

UCHE Agu

Highlife guitarist turned gospel musician. His 2022 album “Ekele” revived the Osita Osadebe sound for gospel. He was so good he got to play at The Experience Lagos 2023.

 

EBUKA SONGS

Known for viral spiritual tracks like “Midnight Cry” and “New Generation”.

 

ADAZION IJ

Famous for her powerful ministrations and deeply rooted Igbo praise medleys.

 

ABLE CEE

Popular for his engaging Igbo highlife gospel beats and soul-lifting vocals.

MINISTER PRUDENCE

Gaining massive traction for her energetic worship renditions and prophetic sounds.

 

RHEMA ONUOHA

A rising voice known for tracks like “Ihe Ê Na-Emere M DË Mma”.
