Police in Ogun State have recovered an English submachine gun and 75 rounds of live ammunition hidden inside a rented apartment previously occupied by a deceased landlord.
The weapon was discovered on 5 August, 2026, at about 1pm by people clearing the apartment, according to a statement released on 10 August by Police Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi.
Officers from the Sakura Division secured the location and recovered the firearm and ammunition from a damaged wardrobe.

The police said the exhibits will undergo ballistic examination at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran, Abeokuta. Investigators are also trying to establish how the firearm and ammunition came to be hidden inside the apartment.
The discovery was one of several police operations recorded in Ogun between 3 and 6 August. The operations also led to the arrest of 38 suspects, including 23 foreign nationals linked to an alleged Ponzi scheme and visa scam.
Gun found during apartment clearing
The firearm discovery stands out because police have not yet established who placed it in the apartment or how long it had been there.
The apartment had previously been occupied by a landlord who had died. The firearm was found inside a damaged wardrobe during clearing work before police were contacted.
Police secured the weapon and 75 rounds of live ammunition for further examination. The investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding their presence at the location.
The recovery came as the command recorded several arrests involving suspected armed robbery, cult activities, fraud, kidnapping and alleged immigration offences.
At Itele, police arrested Babatunde Olasunkanmi on August 3 after a commercial motorcyclist reported that two passengers had tried to rob him at gunpoint.
Police said Olasunkanmi allegedly pointed a locally made cut-to-size double-barrel pistol at the motorcyclist. His alleged accomplice escaped with the victim’s red Bajaj motorcycle.
Officers recovered the pistol, criminal charms, a Tecno Android phone and a UBA ATM card from the arrested suspect.
At Idi Oke, 12 suspected cultists were arrested after police received information about alleged harassment and extortion at Harodous Hotel, Lattykay, Igbesa.
The operation produced eight motorcycles, a black Lexus, an unregistered red Toyota Camry, battle axes, knives, charms and cult-related items.
Seven kidnapping victims rescued
The command also rescued seven people who were abducted on July 29 along Paraga Street, Ipara, Ogun State.
The Anti-Kidnapping Unit worked with the Department of State Services, the Nigerian Army and other security agencies to locate the victims. On 3 August, a police helicopter was deployed after Governor Dapo Abiodun requested aerial support from Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
The helicopter supported ground operations and surveillance that led security teams to the victims. They were taken to the Police Hospital for medical care, with one victim treated for a gunshot injury.
Police later located a suspected kidnappers’ hideout along the Sagamu-Abeokuta Expressway at about 2am on 6 August. A gun battle followed, during which three suspected kidnappers were killed, according to the police.
One AK-47 rifle, an empty magazine, four mobile phones and ₦2.3 million were recovered from the hideout. Police said other gang members escaped with suspected gunshot injuries.
In another operation, officers at Atan-Ota arrested 23 foreign nationals at a gated residential building off Iyana Iyesi, Onipanu-Ota, over an alleged Ponzi scheme, visa scam and other immigration offences.
One Malian international passport bearing the name Diakite Alfousseini was recovered. Twenty-one of the suspects were handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service on 5 August, while two were kept by police over alleged obtaining by false pretence and related offences.
Police also arrested Kehinde Makinde, known as “Pastor Kenny”, in Ibadan on 3 August after four months of investigation. Police alleged that he obtained about ₦2.5 million from 18 fellowship members in Saje, Adatan, by promising to arrange a government-sponsored pilgrimage to Jerusalem and pay each member ₦2 million.
Elsewhere, police recovered a stolen Toyota Hilux along Alapako–Ogunmakin Road and a stolen commercial tricycle at Rounder, Abeokuta. A 31-year-old man, Samuel Adetunji, was arrested over the alleged tricycle theft.
The command also recovered an abandoned red Bajaj motorcycle near a mechanic workshop at Trailer Park, Kara, Sabo Sagamu.
Commissioner of Police Bode Ojajuni commended the governor, police personnel, the DSS, Nigerian Army and other security agencies for their cooperation.
He said the command would continue intelligence-led policing, patrols, rapid response and joint operations against crime in Ogun State.
