Presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Development Council (NDC), Peter Obi, has linked the persistent insecurity in Nigeria to the growing level of hunger and economic hardship across the country.
Obi made the remarks on Thursday during a town hall meeting in Rivers State, where he spoke about the need for Nigeria to improve its economy and create conditions that would make life better for its citizens.
According to the former Anambra State governor, a significant improvement in Nigeria’s economy and overall development could also change how Nigerians are perceived and treated when seeking to travel to other countries.
“The day foreign countries find out that things have started working in Nigeria, Nigerians can start traveling abroad without struggling for visas like we are doing now,” Obi said.
Speaking further on the country’s security challenges, the NDC presidential candidate argued that tackling insecurity requires addressing the underlying economic difficulties confronting many Nigerians.
He maintained that hunger makes it more difficult to effectively combat insecurity, stressing that efforts to restore peace must go hand in hand with measures aimed at reducing poverty and improving citizens’ living conditions.
“To fight insecurity in Nigeria, it will be fought in two ways. It’s hard to fight insecurity when there is hunger,” he said.
Obi’s comments come amid ongoing concerns over insecurity, unemployment, poverty and the rising cost of living in Nigeria.
