The Social Democratic Party’s presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo has promised to put 11 to 15 kilowatts of solar power on every Nigerian’s roof within 11 months if he wins the 2027 election.
He made the promise during a television interview on Tuesday.
Adewole Adebayo said his government would build solar panel manufacturing factories across the country and train Nigerians to install and maintain solar power systems.
He said he has worked on power issues before and has experience with solar technology in his hometown where he trained about 2,000 people.
Adewole Adebayo said he manufactures solar panels himself and makes lithium batteries.
The only thing he buys is the inverter.
He wants to establish solar panel factories through partnerships with countries like China, Turkey and India, with Nigerians trained to run them.
He said solar clusters would provide electricity for homes and create jobs.
He claimed these clusters could generate up to 32,000 megawatts of power. He said the national grid would serve as a backup in case a cluster fails.
Adewole Adebayo argued that government could invest in important sectors like aviation and manufacturing through operating and maintenance contracts instead of leaving them entirely to private operators.
On electricity generation, he said his administration would focus on domestic refining and stop crude oil theft.
He claimed as much as 900,000 barrels of crude oil are still being stolen and recovering this oil would ensure adequate supply without extra government spending.
Adewole Adebayo said government investment in sectors like electricity and education creates jobs because workers in those sectors earn incomes and spend money in the economy.
