Falconets crash out of U-20 Women’s World Cup in quarter-finals

Nigeria’s Falconets have exited the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, falling 1-0 to Colombia in a tightly contested quarter-final that ended their campaign at the last-eight stage.
A late strike from Colombia proved decisive, denying the Falconets a place in the semi-finals despite a tournament run that showed both attacking firepower and defensive resilience.
Nigeria’s journey began with a 2-0 defeat to Spain, a result that put early pressure on the young side.
They responded with a goalless draw against China PR before turning on the style in emphatic fashion, thrashing New Caledonia 10-1 to announce their attacking credentials in the group stage.

The Falconets carried that momentum into the knockout rounds, seeing off England 3-0 to book their quarter-final spot. But Colombia proved a bridge too far, edging Nigeria 0-1 in a match that ended the team’s title hopes.
Nigeria finish the tournament with two wins, one draw, and two losses scoring 13 goals while conceding just 4, numbers that underline a squad capable of both ruthless attack and defensive discipline.
A Storied Tournament History
The Falconets remain the only African nation to have qualified for every edition of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup since it began in 2002. Their finest hour came with back-to-back runner-up finishes losing the final to Germany on both occasions, in 2010 and 2014.
They also reached the semi-finals in Japan in 2012, and have made previous quarter-final appearances in 2006, 2018, and 2022. At the last edition in 2024, hosted in Colombia, the Falconets began with a win over Korea Republic before advancing to the Round of 16, where they bowed out to Japan.
Against that backdrop, this year’s quarter-final finish ironically ended by Colombia, the nation that hosted their previous campaign extends Nigeria’s reputation as one of the tournament’s most consistent performers, even as the elusive title continues to slip just out of reach.
