Ghana’s three major teacher unions have declared a nationwide strike effective Friday, September 25, 2026, following unresolved concerns over the payment of promotion-related salaries and arrears owed to teachers.
The unions, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) say the action follows delays in implementing an agreement reached with the government on the placement of teachers who were promoted.
The unions had given the government until midday on Thursday, September 24, to address the outstanding issues. The deadline passed without the payments being fully effected, according to the unions.
The dispute centres on the 2025 promotion placements and the payment of related arrears. The unions had expected affected teachers to be automatically placed on their appropriate salary scales by the end of September, with a supplementary payroll to cater for those not captured in the initial process.
Other concerns raised by the unions include the renewal of the teachers’ Collective Agreement and payment of the Deprived Area Allowance.
The nationwide industrial action could affect teaching activities in public schools as teachers begin the strike.
The unions have previously urged their members to remain calm and follow directives from their leadership as the dispute over the outstanding payments continues.
