Media personality Daddy Freeze has reacted to the six-year prison sentence handed to Nigerian-British taxi driver Kolawole Erunkulu after he fell asleep at the wheel and fatally hit a man in Surrey, United Kingdom.

Erunkulu, 45, was sentenced at Guildford Crown Court after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving. The fatal crash happened shortly before 6:30am on August 17, 2025, on the A23 in Merstham, Surrey.

The victim, 59-year-old Philip Dray, had parked his Volkswagen safely in a roadside layby and was opening his driver’s door to get back into the vehicle when Erunkulu’s Audi crossed into the layby and struck him. Dray died at the scene.

An investigation by Surrey Police found that Erunkulu had driven for about 53 hours across the three days before the crash. His longest rest period was seven hours, while other breaks were approximately four hours and two hours. He had also been working as a taxi driver for about 12 hours immediately before the collision, with only minor breaks.

Footage from an interior camera showed Erunkulu falling into what police described as a “microsleep”, a brief episode of sleep lasting only seconds. During one of these episodes, his vehicle veered across the carriageway and hit Dray. The car continued for about 10 seconds before Erunkulu stopped at another layby.

Erunkulu, who holds joint Nigerian and British nationality, was charged with causing death by dangerous driving in March 2026 and pleaded guilty in June. He was sentenced to six years in prison on August 25 and was also disqualified from driving for eight years.

The case has since generated discussion online, particularly around claims that Erunkulu had allegedly been working long hours because of problems at home. However, police and court reports reviewed do not establish that avoiding his wife was the reason for his working pattern.

Reacting to the case, Daddy Freeze questioned why Erunkulu continued driving despite being tired and argued that he should have found another place to sleep if he did not want to return home.

He said, “Kola is not a victim, prison is where he deserves to be. If his wife didn’t allow him to sleep, why didn’t he sleep inside his car?”

His comments have since generated mixed reactions online, with some users agreeing that Erunkulu should take full responsibility, while others argued that domestic problems and extreme fatigue may have contributed to his decision-making.
