Nigerian singer Fave has opened up about the challenges female artistes encounter while trying to build successful careers in the music industry.
The singer noted that female musicians are often judged on more than their talent, with their physical appearance, dressing and attractiveness sometimes becoming a major part of public scrutiny.
According to Fave, female artistes may face pressure over their bodies and clothing, with discussions about their music often overshadowed by how they look and how they are perceived sexually.
“It’s harder for female artists to blow. Female artists aren’t measured by talent but by what they wear. If your tummy isn’t flat… it’s never really about the music; it’s more about people’s sexual desires or their fantasies about you.”
She described the situation as problematic, explaining that women in the industry can feel pressured to meet certain beauty and dressing standards before their musical abilities receive the attention they deserve.
“And I think that right there is a problem, because it becomes more about how decently you are dressed before people listen to you.”
Fave further pointed out that male artistes generally do not face the same level of scrutiny regarding their physical appearance.
“But when it comes to men, they aren’t held to that same standard.”
The singer also expressed her admiration for the abilities of female performers, insisting that women continue to demonstrate strong performance skills on stage.
“When it comes to performances, female artists perform better.”
