Singer k.d. lang has looked back on an unexpected encounter with supermodel Cindy Crawford in a recent interview.
The singer once sat in a barber’s chair to be shaved by Crawford and has now referred to the moment as “magical.” She also revealed how she got the opportunity through her friend, who was working on the shoot at the time.
One of the most unlikely encounters in the life of singer k.d. lang was meeting Cindy Crawford for a shoot for the August 1993 Vanity Fair cover.
Looking back at that moment in a cover story with The Guardian, Lang described it as “magical” before revealing that she inspired the director, who was her friend, to go for the shaving scene in a barber’s chair.
“I was friends with Herb [Ritts], and somehow I got the opportunity to do the Vanity Fair cover, and he was shooting it. I have kind of an obsession with cutting hair and barber shops. I don’t know where that came from…. It must be some sort of childhood visualization imprint or something,” the singer recalled.
“I suggested to Herb, maybe we can do it in a barber’s chair,” she added.

After Lang initially suggested the scene to her friend, it took only a few days for it to come together.
They shot the scene on the rooftop of his building, and according to the singer, Crawford was “super professional,” while she found it a tad bit difficult to do the same.
“She’s a model, so it was her realm. I was trying to behave and not be an idiot. It was incredible, and I knew that it had a certain gravity to it,” Lang also recalled.
Looking back on that moment, Lang shared that they had created a “piece of art and a significant social statement” that still makes her feel proud whenever she thinks of it.

3Elsewhere in the interview, Lang was also asked how she “emotes raw vulnerability” in her songs.
To her, it all begins with trying to sing herself into the lyrics first. Then, she takes it into an internal, emotional place.
“I try to create visuals, sort of an emotional internal movie of what the lyrics possess, to relive it emotionally,” she remarked.
“With Honey and Smoke, for example, I imagine watching somebody I’m in love with dancing with somebody else and feeling jealousy,” she added, referencing her song with two members of the supergroup case/lang/veirs.

Lang’s stint with the supergroup was brief, lasting just a few years and producing only one album, named after the group.
Today, she still remembers that collaboration fondly but admits it wasn’t easy.
“I remember it being quite difficult in terms of having three major artists, who had been bosses their whole lives, coming together, we had to navigate and reformulate how we worked, the structure of writing and creativity,” the singer recalled.
Although Lang didn’t exactly state it, she hinted that a reunion of the group was unlikely. However, they still remain friends to this day.

3Years ago, Lang revealed how she came out to her mother, sharing that it began with the pain of experiencing heartbreak as a young teenager.
“I came out to my mum when I was 17. My high school sweetheart had left me for someone else, and I was really upset. It was hard. My mum was a Christian, and this was early; this was 1977 or 1978,” she said.
“So, that was a pretty big deal in a small town then, and my mum struggled with it for a couple of years,” the singer added.
Today, their relationship is much stronger, largely because of everything she has accomplished and the public recognition she has received.
