A Nigerian woman living in Germany has shared how she helped her son respond after he was allegedly subjected to a racist remark by a German classmate.
According to the woman, her son returned home one day and told her that a German boy in his class had called him a “slave.”
Rather than allowing the incident to intimidate her son, the mother said she advised him to confidently confront the boy the next time he made such a remark.
She recalled telling her son:
“My son came home to tell me that his German classmate called him a slave. I told him that when he say that again tell him that it was his wicked grandfathers that sold our fathers.”
The woman explained that her son followed her advice and confronted the classmate when the opportunity arose.
According to her, the boy stopped making the remark after her son stood up to him. However, the situation reportedly took another turn when the German child informed his parents about the confrontation.
She said the boy’s parents subsequently contacted the teacher over the incident.
The Nigerian mother’s account has drawn attention to the different ways parents respond when their children experience racism or discrimination, particularly in foreign countries.
