NANS begins federal roads inspection to assess impact

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), the body representing tertiary students across the country, has started a nationwide inspection of federal highway projects to check how road conditions affect daily campus travel.

The inspection team began its work in Kaduna State by examining the Federal Government construction project along the Kaduna-Abuja Road. Student leaders focused on the section running past the Federal Co-operative College in Kaduna, which serves as a primary travel path for students attending classes every day.

NANS President, Comrade Babatunde Afeez Akinteye, explained that the group wants direct information on federal highways serving tertiary schools. He noted that students rely heavily on these transport links for daily travel, making road quality important to their overall welfare.

Findings from Kano College visit

The student leadership next traveled to Kano State to inspect the Kaduna-Kano Road, focusing on the section passing through Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education. NANS reported that this stretch was in good condition, with upgraded transport structures making movement easier around the school.

During the visit, the national leaders met with local student union officers and learners at Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education to discuss civic awareness and school infrastructure. Akinteye told the gathering that young people must remain involved in public policy, as government decisions at all levels affect their lives.

The visiting delegation also held discussions with the college management regarding student welfare, where Akinteye commended the Provost, Dr Kabiru Ahmed Gwarzo, for supporting student needs.

The national student group confirmed that the inspection visits will continue across other parts of the country to check federal roads leading to higher institutions. The exercise will review construction quality, measure the practical impact on learners, and highlight areas needing attention.

NANS noted that it draft an official report detailing its observations and recommendations for government action and that it will keep supporting policies that improve transport facilities around tertiary institutions.
