Nigeria’s Super Falcons have lost one of their most dependable defenders.
Osinachi Ohale has announced her retirement from international football, closing a 16-year chapter that carried her through four FIFA Women’s World Cups, seven WAFCON tournaments, and five continental titles.
The 33-year-old, born in Owerri, built her name as a rock at the back for Nigeria, earning 86 caps along the way. Her club journey stretched across three continents: she started out with Houston Dash in the United States, moved through Sweden’s top flight with Vittsjö GIK and Växjö DFF, then crossed into Spain with CD Tacón, Madrid CFF, and Deportivo Alavés. She currently turns out for Mexican side CF Pachuca.
Ohale broke the news in a heartfelt farewell post, thanking Nigeria for the chance to represent the national team. She described the choice as painful but final, writing that she was walking away with “gratitude and no regrets.”

“After 16 years of wearing the Nigerian jersey… I have made the very difficult decision to retire,” she said, summing up a career that spanned generations of Super Falcons squads.
Across her international run, Ohale featured in four World Cups and seven WAFCON editions, lifting the continental trophy five times a haul that places her among the most decorated defenders in African women’s football history. She said the journey meant more to her than silverware alone, pointing to the sacrifices and bonds she built along the way.
“I gave this jersey my youth, my strength, my sweat, my tears, and my heart,” she wrote, adding that she would pick Nigeria again “every single time” if given the choice.
The defender also thanked her teammates, coaching staff, family, and the Nigeria Football Federation for standing behind her throughout her career. She singled out the country’s supporters for a special mention, crediting their loyalty for making every match feel worthwhile.
“Thank you for believing in us, supporting us, celebrating with us, and standing by us,” she told fans, acknowledging both the victories and the setbacks they shared together.
Even in stepping away from the national team, Ohale made clear her bond with Nigeria isn’t ending. She called representing her country the proudest achievement of her career, ahead of any trophy or record.
“Today, I say goodbye to international football with no regrets only gratitude,” she said, before rattling off her own numbers: 86 caps, 16 years, four World Cups, seven WAFCON appearances, five WAFCON titles.
She closed her message with a line that captured the emotional weight of the moment: the jersey may come off her shoulders, but it stays with her forever.
