Osun State lawmakers have started working to change the law that created Osun State University, 20 years after it was established.
The governor asked them to make changes through a letter he sent in July.
The proposed amendment would give the university’s Vice-Chancellor two extra years in office.
It would also create a system for scholarships and grants for students.
Lawmakers backing the plan say the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Odunayo Olabooye, has done excellent work during his five years and deserves more time to keep developing the university.
They argued that extending his tenure would help the institution continue its progress, improve how staff are treated, keep things stable and boost productivity.
They said it would also set a good example for future leaders of the university.
The lawmakers said the amendment would strengthen the university and help it keep growing.
The bill passed its second reading and will now move forward for further consideration.
The House also received another bill establishing a debt management office that lawmakers will review before voting on it.
