The umbrella body of registered political parties in Nigeria, Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC), has strongly condemned the reported attack on the convoy of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in Benue State.
It described the incident as outrageous and an invitation to anarchy.
IPAC, in a press release issued yesterday by its national publicity secretary, Comrade Egbeola Wale Martins, said Obi’s convoy was allegedly attacked by hoodlums on the Makurdi-Gboko Highway while he was travelling to Yelwata in Guma local government area.
The former Anambra State governor was said to be on a visit to families affected by the June 2025 killings in the area, despite notifying the police ahead of the trip.
The council condemned what it described as political intolerance against a presidential candidate who was on a condolence visit, warning that such actions could undermine democratic participation and peace in the country.
According to IPAC, restricting a Nigerian citizen from entering any part of the country would amount to a violation of the constitutional right to freedom of movement.
“Benue State is already bleeding over constant terrorists’ attacks, sponsoring youths to block and attack Obi’s convoy is a misplaced aggression and height of rascality. It is unacceptable,” the council said.
IPAC, however, commended the police for the reported arrest of 46 suspects in connection with the incident and called for a thorough investigation to establish both the immediate and remote causes of the attack.
The council also urged security agencies to identify all those responsible for the incident, including any alleged sponsors, and ensure that anyone found culpable faces justice in accordance with the law.
IPAC said that as the umbrella body of registered political parties in Nigeria, it remained committed to democratic participation and the protection of the rights of all Nigerians.
It added that the country must continue to work towards building “a strong, united, prosperous, inclusive and just democratic society.”
