Strange Wind And Heavy Downpour Destroys Famous King’s Funeral, Scatters Mourners, Tents And Plastic Chairs 

Mourning ceremonies at Karuziika Palace in western Uganda has descended into disarray after a sudden storm swept through the grounds, forcing family members, royals, and sympathisers gathered to pay their respects to King Oyo to scatter for shelter.

The gathering had been proceeding solemnly, with attendees seated and observing the traditional rites honouring the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who died on August 27 at the age of 34 following a brief illness.

His remains were returned to the palace ahead of a burial scheduled for September 12, part of the Tooro Kingdom’s nine-day mourning period.

Without warning, strong winds and heavy rain tore through the compound, bending trees and battering the tents and seating arrangements set up for mourners.

Chairs were flung about, and the once orderly gathering quickly turned chaotic as people abandoned their seats and rushed for cover, temporarily halting the proceedings altogether.

For many Batooro subjects present, the timing of the storm carried weight beyond ordinary weather. Some interpreted the dramatic downpour as a message from the late king himself, particularly against the backdrop of a tense and unresolved succession dispute within the kingdom.

Meteorologically speaking, similar heavy rain was reported across the wider Fort Portal region that day, suggesting a natural weather pattern rather than anything extraordinary, though that has done little to dampen the symbolic weight many attached to the moment.

Once the storm passed, mourners are said to have regrouped to continue the rites, even as the kingdom continues to navigate both its grief and the ongoing debate over who will succeed the young monarch.
