Anambra State First Lady, Dr Nonye Soludo, has clarified the godparent relationship between her family and that of former Anambra governor Peter Obi, saying Obi is not the godfather of any of her children.
The clarification followed a statement by Obi in which he said that he and his wife, Margaret, are godparents to the children of Governor Chukwuma Soludo. Obi made the remark while speaking at the 22nd Conference of the Nigerian Guild of Editors in Enugu.
Reacting to the development, Daniel Ezeigwe, media aide to the Anambra First Lady, said the claim had been widely circulated and generated calls from members of the public seeking clarification.
According to the statement, Nonye Soludo is the confirmation godmother to one of Peter Obi’s daughters, while Margaret Obi is the baptismal godmother to one of Soludo’s daughters. Neither Peter Obi nor Governor Chukwuma Soludo is a godparent to the other’s children.
The statement said:
“Mr Peter Obi is not a godfather to any of the children of Professor Chukwuma and Dr Nonye Soludo.
“The facts concerning the godparent relationship between the two families are as follows: Dr Nonye Soludo, First Lady of Anambra State, is the confirmation ‘godmother’ to Peter Obi’s daughter.
“Mrs Margaret Obi, wife of Mr Peter Obi, is the baptismal godmother to one of Prof Chukwuma Soludo’s daughters.
“Neither Mr Obi nor Professor Soludo has served as a godparent to the other’s children.”
Ezeigwe added that Obi may have simply misspoken while making his earlier remarks, noting that the clarification was necessary because of the attention the statement generated. He also said the relationship between the two families remained cordial.
The clarification has since triggered reactions on social media, with some users questioning the distinction between a husband and wife in a godparent relationship, while others argued that the First Lady was simply stating the facts.
