Susan Sarandon has been among the most vocal supporters of the pro-Palestine movement in Hollywood. This includes her 2023 comments that led to the actress being dropped by her talent agency. Now, years later, the 79-year-old is opening up about how being vocal about her stance continues to affect her career.
Sarandon served on a panel while at the Venice Film Festival on September 6. During the event, the “Feud” star was asked about her vocal support for the pro-Palestinian movement and how it has impacted her career over the years. Specifically, the person asking the question wanted to know whether she felt the tides were turning in the years since United Talent Agency dropped her.
Per a clip from PEOPLE, she stated, “I think that the narrative has completely changed. There’s a lot of things that people are aware of now.” Despite the changes, Sarandon’s career remains affected.
According to her, “In terms of the power structure. I’ve still had movies taken away recently, because there are agencies that are telling people not to hire me still. But that’s the power structure.” However, there’s still support for her in the movie business, as she revealed, “Certainly, internationally, I feel welcome.”
She then said, “So it depends. If it’s a major studio, I think there is, not just with me, but with other people, that have been told that that is impossible.”
Susan Sarandon Says More People Understand The ‘Situation’
5Regarding why the tides are turning in Hollywood’s response to the pro-Palestine movement, Sarandon stated at the Venice Film Festival that more people today have a better understanding of what she called “the situation” than they did in 2023.
She explained, “So I think, yes, there has been a change in terms of understanding of the situation, and I think the general public.”
However, in speaking about why roadblocks still exist, Sarandon stated, “But there are still very strongly held positions within my industry held by Zionists and [those] who have not relaxed their feelings towards me. But I found my family, I found my people, and I’m okay.”
She then spoke about her new film, “The Echo Chamber,” noting that she needed to thank the director, Andrea Pallaoro, “In terms of doing this film, I thank [the director] for that, because he didn’t listen to the warnings.”
5Sarandon attended a pro-Palestinian rally in New York City in November 2023. While there, she stated that Jewish people who felt afraid following the Hamas attacks were “getting a taste” of what Muslim people experience in America.
Days later, according to The Guardian, United Talent Agency dropped her from its client roster. She then apologized in December 2023 while maintaining her support for the pro-Palestinian movement.
Per PEOPLE, she said on social media in a since-deleted post, “Intending to communicate my concern for an increase in hate crimes, I said that Jewish Americans, as the targets of rising antisemitic hate, ‘are getting a taste of what it is like to be Muslim in this country, so often subjected to violence. This phrasing was a terrible mistake, as it implies that until recently Jews have been strangers to persecution, when the opposite is true.”
The actress continued, “As we all know, from centuries of oppression and genocide in Europe, to the Tree of Life shooting in Pittsburgh, PA, Jews have long been familiar with discrimination and religious violence which continues to this day.”
After that, Sarandon expressed deep regret in “diminishing this reality and hurting people with this comment.’ She then explained, “It was my intent to show solidarity to the struggle against bigotry of all kinds, and I am sorry I failed to do so.”
The Acting Legend Hasn’t Appeared In A Major Hollywood Film Since 2023
5Sarandon has remained active in the movie business since her 2023 comments. However, as she stated while at the Venice Film Festival, she hasn’t appeared in a project from a big studio since. Notably, Sarandon’s last time in a film of this magnitude was in 2023’s “Blue Beetle” from Warner Bros.
In the years since, Sarandon’s projects have either been independent projects on streaming series or movies. This includes appearances in Netflix’s “The Six Triple Eight” (2024) and “Nonnas” (2025). Regarding “The Echo Chamber,” the movie will premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival.
Susan Sarandon Has Multiple Projects In The Works
5Despite not getting offers from major Hollywood studios, Sarandon has multiple movies in various stages of development. According to Deadline, she was cast in the supernatural thriller “Unmerciful Good Fortune” in November 2025. The movie is listed as being in pre-production on IMDb.
Additonally, Deadline reported in June 2026 that Surandon had wrapped production on another independent film, “Exit Right.”
