A 48-year-old man named Akiah Edward who works as a travel agent was brought to court on Tuesday in Abeokuta.
He is accused of collecting N6 million from a person by lying to them.
Edward is facing two charges.
The first is obtaining money through false pretence, and the second is conduct that could cause trouble and fighting between people.
According to the prosecutor, Edward met a man named Nasir Abiola and told him he was a travel agent who could help him get a Canadian visa.
Edward asked Abiola to give him N500,000 as a down payment to start the process.
After getting that money, Edward kept asking for more money.
He collected N4.7 million and then another N800,000. All together, Abiola gave him N6 million.
Edward said there was another N3 million that would be paid when the visa was ready.
However, after Abiola paid the N6 million, he kept asking Edward about his visa.
Edward kept making excuses and did not have good reasons for why the visa was not ready.
Edward told the court that he did not do what the government says he did.
He said he is not guilty of the charges.
The judge gave Edward bail.
He must pay N9 million and find two people who will promise to the court that he will come back for his trial.
These two people must be registered with the Ogun State court system.
Edward must go to Ibara Correctional Centre, which is like a jail, while he gets the money together for his bail.
The case will come back to court on October 14th for the trial to begin.
