Bayern Munich brace for weeks without Kompany

Bayern Munich have prepared to spend several weeks without head coach Vincent Kompany, whose collapse during a reserve-team training session has sent the 40-year-old Belgian into hospital for thorough medical examinations, while the club’s leadership has promised him all the time he needs to recover and refused to put a date on his return.

Sporting director Max Eberl, who addressed reporters on Saturday, made clear that the club will not hurry Kompany back to the touchline, telling journalists that the recovery period will be measured in weeks rather than days and that Bayern first need to establish what caused the collapse before anyone discusses a timeline.

The club confirmed on Friday that Kompany needed medical attention after falling ill while he watched the reserve side train, and it has not publicly identified the cause, with Eberl insisting that Bayern will wait for the results of the examinations instead of speculating about his condition.

The setback has prompted questions about how Kompany’s health unfolded in the days before the incident, since reports indicate that he had been struggling physically ahead of Bayern’s Champions League meeting with Arsenal on Wednesday.

Kompany skipped a training session and the pre-match press conference, yet he still returned to the dugout for the game, which finished 2-2, and the collapse followed within days.

Bayern have moved quickly to keep the squad stable, and the coaching staff will run training and matchday duties until further notice, which means assistant coach Aaron Danks is expected to lead the team when they travel to Freiburg for a Bundesliga fixture on Sunday.

Eberl rejected any suggestion of reshuffling the technical department in Kompany’s absence, praising the staff as fantastic and describing the club’s success as the product of an outstanding team working behind the scenes, with not the slightest thought of changing anything.

The club’s show of faith reflects how much Bayern have invested in Kompany since he arrived from Burnley in 2024 and guided them to the Bundesliga title in his first season, and the commitment grew stronger last October when the Munich side extended his contract until June 2029.
