ADC warns APC against turning ₦50,000 relief into 2027 campaign funds

The Oyo State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has warned the All Progressives Congress (APC) against using the Federal Government’s proposed ₦50,000 monthly relief programme to attract political support ahead of the 2027 elections.

The party said access to the proposed financial assistance must not depend on political affiliation, membership of the ruling party or participation in its campaigns.

The Oyo ADC Publicity Secretary, Chief Rotimi Johnson, gave the warning in a statement issued on Sunday.

He said the party supported its National Publicity Secretary, Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, in demanding accountability over the proposed programme.

Party demands safeguards against political favouritism

The ADC questioned how the Federal Government would select beneficiaries and prevent partisan interests from influencing the process.

It demanded the publication of eligibility requirements and the procedures for selecting recipients of the ₦50,000 monthly relief.

The party also asked the government to disclose the payment platform, commencement date, duration and audit arrangements.

It said the Federal Government must publish the approved budget provision, funding source and total cost of the programme.

The party further demanded independent monitoring involving credible civil society organisations and a public dashboard showing disbursements without exposing beneficiaries’ personal information.

Johnson warned that the approach to distributing public assistance should not give political parties control over access to government support.

“Hunger must not become an electoral bargaining chip,” he said.

ADC demands records of previous interventions

The party also questioned the government’s handling of earlier relief programmes, demanding the release of disbursement records and audit findings for TraderMoni, Conditional Cash Transfers and other interventions.

It said the introduction of another financial assistance scheme should not exempt the government from accounting for previous spending.

The Oyo ADC also accused the APC of displaying wealth during campaign mobilisation despite the hardship Nigerians face.

It warned that the ruling party’s attempt to regain public confidence ahead of the 2027 elections must not turn public funds into campaign funds.

WHAT READERS SHOULD KNOW

The ADC has set a seven-day deadline for the Federal Government to provide full details of the proposed ₦50,000 monthly relief programme.

Its demands include funding records, beneficiary selection criteria, payment arrangements, independent monitoring and an account of previous interventions.

Johnson said the party would continue questioning the programme until Nigerians received answers.
