The Federal Government has renewed efforts to address livestock diseases affecting farmers and food production, as it explores partnerships to improve vaccine access across the country.
The development was disclosed in a statement shared on the official page of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development.
According to the statement, the Minister of Livestock Development Idi Mukhtar Maiha, on April 20, 2026, received a delegation from Ambuvets Konsult and MCI Santé Animale in Abuja.
It stated that the meeting was focused on addressing the impact of livestock diseases such as Peste des Petits Ruminants, Foot-and-Mouth Disease and Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia, which have continued to affect productivity and farmer income.
Maiha stressed the importance of animal health in national development, noting that disease control remains central to ongoing reforms in the livestock sector.
“We are undertaking an ambitious transformation of the livestock sector, one in which disease prevention, control, and management are central pillars,” he said.
He added that partnerships with private organisations would help strengthen capacity to tackle transboundary diseases and improve access to vaccines for farmers.
The ministry noted that the collaboration involves Ambuvets Konsult, a Nigerian animal health company, and MCI Santé Animale, a veterinary pharmaceutical firm, working to improve vaccine production and distribution.
Chief Executive Officer of Ambuvets Konsult, Shehu Shamsudeen, said the partnership aims to close gaps in vaccine availability by combining manufacturing and distribution networks.
It was further noted that the Chief Executive Officer of MCI Santé Animale, Tadlaoui Omari Khalid, emphasised the need for local solutions to livestock health challenges in Africa.
“For me, it is to find the best solution for our continent. We have to come together and find the right solutions for ourselves,” he said.
The statement added that the initiative also involves collaboration with the National Veterinary Research Institute to support vaccine trials and ensure effectiveness under local conditions.
