Hon. Chille Igbawua, a former governorship aspirant and Adviser to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) National Chairman, Senator David Mark, has faulted Peter Obi’s decision to exit the ADC, describing it as a miscalculation.
Igbawua, who also served on the ADC Electoral Panel, said Obi ought to have remained in the party to participate in its presidential primary and draw lessons even if he had lost to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Speaking on Channels Television on Tuesday evening, he maintained that the ADC primary was conducted on a level playing field for all aspirants.
He referenced the outcome from Benue State, where Atiku allegedly polled 55,000 votes, Rotimi Amaechi scored 30,000, and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen got 22,000.
“We started this process of the coalition, and I was there at the beginning, from where we adopted ADC as the political platform,” Igbawua said.
He added that remaining in the race would have helped contestants test their popularity and strengthen their chances in future elections.
When asked whether Obi might be better off for leaving the party, Igbawua disagreed, saying: “I don’t think he can thank his heavens… I don’t think he made the right choice, as far as I’m concerned.”
He further stressed that the coalition was formed in the spirit of rescuing Nigeria rather than advancing personal ambitions, urging political leaders to prioritise sacrifice over walking away when outcomes do not favour them.
Peter Obi has since left the ADC and emerged as the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).
