According to report from traders in the market, the woman was allegedly caught trying to leave the market with the stolen plantain hidden inside a bag. Moments later, a crowd gathered around her, accusing her of theft before the situation quickly turned violent and humiliating.
Videos and photos said to be from the scene have since circulated on social media, showing the woman being publicly disgraced while onlookers watched and recorded with their phones. Some traders reportedly defended the action, claiming repeated cases of theft in the market had frustrated business owners.
However, many traders have condemned the punishment, describing it as inhumane and unlawful. Human rights supporters argued that no one deserves to be stripped naked or publicly humiliated over allegations of theft, especially over food items believed to be of little value.
