Civil society organisations (CSOs) in Akwa Ibom State have called for stronger collaboration between citizens and security agencies to address rising insecurity and violent crime across Nigeria.The call was made during the “Akwa Ibom Unite Against Terror” civic campaign organised by the Centre for Human Rights and Accountability Network (CHRAN) in Uyo.
Speaking at the event, CHRAN State Director, Mr. Franklyn Isong, described terrorism and violent crime as threats that affect all Nigerians regardless of religion, ethnicity, or social status. “Terror is a common enemy to all Nigerians. If you see something, say something. Citizens must support security agencies through timely information sharing and cooperation,” Isong said.
Also speaking, Convener of the Akwa Ibom Human Rights Community, Mr. Clifford Thomas, urged communities to strengthen local vigilance and lawful self-protection measures while maintaining cooperation with security agencies.He referenced constitutional provisions on self-defence and advocated greater community involvement in safeguarding lives and property.
Thomas also reiterated calls for the establishment of state police as part of broader efforts to improve security. Other speakers, including Dr. Victor David of Vital Partners, stressed that addressing insecurity requires collective action from government, communities, and citizens.
According to David, Nigerians must not allow insecurity to undermine national unity, democratic values, or economic development.The participants called for improved intelligence sharing, stronger community-security partnerships, and sustained efforts to ensure that citizens can live, work, travel, worship, and participate in civic activities.
