The Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Jibril Ismail Falgore, has described June 12 as a symbol of Nigeria’s journey towards democratic governance, the rule of law and accountable leadership.
Falgore stated this in a message to commemorate Democracy Day, as Nigerians marked another anniversary of the historic June 12 struggle.
The message was contained in a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Kano State House of Assembly, Kamaluddeen Sani Shawai, and made available to journalists in Kano.
According to the Speaker, June 12 occupies a unique place in Nigeria’s political history and serves as a reminder of the courage, resilience and sacrifices of citizens who fought for democratic governance.
He said the significance of the day transcends partisan politics and reflects the collective will of the people, their demand for justice and accountability, and their commitment to democratic values.
While acknowledging the progress made since Nigeria’s return to civilian rule, Falgore noted that several challenges still remain in the quest to fully realise the ideals of democracy.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Kano State Government under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to promoting inclusive governance, strengthening democratic institutions and enhancing accountability in public service.
The Speaker also reiterated the commitment of the Kano State House of Assembly to responding to the aspirations of the people through effective legislation and oversight.
According to him, the Assembly remains determined to enact people-oriented laws that will improve the welfare and living standards of residents across the state.
Falgore urged citizens to continue supporting efforts aimed at strengthening democratic institutions and promoting peaceful coexistence.
He called on Nigerians to work collectively towards building a society where justice, development and citizen participation are not merely aspirations but realities experienced by all.
On behalf of members of the Kano State House of Assembly, the Speaker congratulated the people of Kano State, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the occasion of Democracy Day.
He expressed optimism that Nigeria’s democracy would continue to grow stronger through justice, equity, national unity and active civic participation.
