Chelsea captain Reece James has expressed his disappointment following the departure of teammate Marc Cucurella, who has completed a move to Real Madrid during the summer transfer window.
Cucurella ended his four-year spell at Stamford Bridge to join the Spanish giants after attracting interest from several top European clubs.
Speaking to talkSPORT from England’s World Cup training camp in Kansas City, James admitted he was saddened by the defender’s exit.
“Yeah, I spoke with him a few days ago,” James said.
“He’s an amazing player, undoubtedly one of the best left-backs in the world. This is football—players come and go—but I’m devastated to see him leave. I wish him nothing but success in the next chapter of his career.”
Chelsea signed the Spanish international from Brighton for £63 million in 2022. During his time with the Blues, Cucurella made 163 appearances and helped the club win the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup.
Although clubs such as Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, and Manchester City were reportedly interested in securing his services, Cucurella ultimately opted for a move to Real Madrid.
The defender had previously voiced concerns over Chelsea’s transfer strategy and the club’s decision to part ways with former manager Enzo Maresca earlier this year.
Despite being an important member of the squad, Cucurella was reportedly not included among Chelsea’s “untouchable” players, a group said to feature stars such as Cole Palmer and club captain Reece James.
