The chances of the Senatorial Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Delta North, Rt. Hon. Engr. Victor Onyekachi Ochei, has again received a major boost, following the mass defection of many members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other political parties into the NDC during his consultation and sensitisation visit to Ward 9 at Okpanam in Oshimili North Local Government Area of the state.
The event attracted a large turnout of party faithful and supporters, with the defectors publicly declaring their allegiance to the NDC in what many described as a significant political realignment in Oshimili North, ahead of the 2027 General Elections in Nigeria.
Addressing the gathering, the former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly said the growing support for his political aspiration reflected the desire of the people for purposeful leadership, inclusive governance and effective representation in Delta North.
Ochei, who also served as Executive Director of Cabotage Services at the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), expressed concern over what he described as the slow pace of development across the senatorial district, insisting that the people deserved better representation and much more dividends of democracy.
He urged youths to become active participants in the political process, stressing that leadership opportunities should not remain concentrated in the hands of a few individuals.
According to him, the continued recycling of the same political figures and families left little room for the emergence of younger leaders.
Ochei therefore called on young people to rise, make their voices heard and take their rightful place in shaping the future of Delta North.
He said he would unveil his comprehensive agenda for the district when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially opens campaigns, adding that the NDC remained committed to good governance, accountability, inclusive development and people-centred leadership.
Ochei also commended the NDC House of Assembly candidate for Oshimili North, Ashinze Obi Odogwu, praising his humanitarian interventions and grassroots engagement through his foundation.
In his remarks, Obi Odogwu pledged to champion meaningful development across Oshimili North if elected into the Delta State House of Assembly.
He described Ochei as an accomplished politician, experienced administrator and a worthy Anioma son whose record of public service and effective representation speaks for itself.
The highlight of the event was the formal reception of the defectors, who pledged their loyalty to the leadership of the NDC and expressed confidence in Ochei’s leadership and vision for Delta North.
Among those in attendance were NDC leaders in Oshimili North, Ward 9 executives, party stakeholders, supporters and community members.
