Former Manchester United defender, Gary Neville, has asserted that, at the moment, only one team stands a chance of halting France’s progress in the World Cup this summer.
Didier Deschamps’ squad has displayed exceptional performance throughout the tournament, maintaining their impressive form with a decisive 3-0 victory over Sweden in the last 32 on Tuesday night.
Kylian Mbappe scored two additional goals, bringing his total to six for the tournament, while Bradley Barcola netted the other goal in New Jersey as they beat Sweden 3-0.
The French team has been slicing through their opponents with remarkable ease, having previously defeated Senegal 3-1, Iraq 3-0, and Norway 4-1 before this latest triumph.
Their next challenge is against Paraguay, who eliminated Germany on Monday night, but they will be considered significant underdogs when facing the formidable French team.
Neville believes that the only team currently capable of challenging France is Argentina, who also progressed through their group with three victories and will face Cape Verde in the last 32.
The former England defender suggests that the defending champions might be the ones to thwart France’s ambitions, but he has yet to see any other teams that could be placed in the same category.
He told ITV, “The only team I can see stopping France right now, because of the mentality, is Argentina. Because of the nastiness and the horribleness and their experience.
“That’s the only team I can see that’s got the unity right now that I think could stand in front of France.
“Look, something may emerge. England, Spain, Portugal, we may see a step up. Let’s hope so.”
