The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has activated its National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) to strengthen nationwide coordination and response efforts as the 2026 flood season gathers momentum.
The Director-General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, inaugurated the Centre at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, saying the initiative is aimed at improving the collection, analysis and dissemination of reliable information to support flood preparedness and emergency response across the country.
She said the Centre would serve as the national hub for monitoring flood incidents, coordinating stakeholders and providing credible data to guide decision-making and the timely deployment of emergency resources.
Mrs. Umar urged members of the Operations Centre to carry out their responsibilities with diligence, professionalism and dedication, stressing that accurate and timely information is essential for effective disaster management.
According to her, the activation of the NEOC forms part of NEMA’s proactive strategy to enhance national preparedness for flooding and other climate-induced disasters during the 2026 rainy season.
She noted that timely access to verified information would strengthen early warning systems, improve coordinated response and help protect lives, property and livelihoods in flood-prone communities.
Speaking on behalf of the team, NEMA’s Deputy Director of Planning, Research and Forecasting, Mr. Tony Ephraim, assured the Director-General of the Centre’s commitment to effective monitoring, data collection, analysis and information management.
He said members of the Centre would work closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure prompt information sharing and coordinated responses to flood emergencies and other climate-related hazards nationwide.
The National Emergency Operations Centre will operate throughout the 2026 rainy season, serving as NEMA’s central coordination platform for harmonising information from relevant agencies and supporting effective disaster preparedness and response across the country.
