Nigerian music video director TG Omori has revealed that some of the music videos he has worked on cost more than $100,000 to produce.
Speaking on a podcast, Omori discussed the money involved in making music videos, especially those shot outside Nigeria.
Omori said video directors and filmmakers do not like sharing what they spend on projects because filmmaking is different and costs depend on the idea and where you shoot.
Revealing budgets can also discourage some people or make them think the creative work is not worth much.
Music videos shot in the United States, especially in cities like Las Vegas and Los Angeles, cost much more because of extra production costs.
Shooting abroad is more expensive because he has to pay for insurance and many other things.
Each hour spent adds up.
These productions can go well over $100,000 because payments are made in dollars and many costs must be covered.
Omori said he has also produced some music videos in Nigeria for around $100,000, and such budgets make more profit when done locally.
But spending the same amount abroad brings much lower returns because most of the money goes into production and service costs.
He enjoys shooting in Nigeria because labour and manpower are quite affordable.
He can find good local artisans who can deliver quality work with proper supervision and clear creative direction.
Working with local artisans in Lagos can save money but costs time and sleep.
Directors have to closely watch every step to get what they want.
He has to monitor everything from how nails go into wood to ensure the final result matches his vision.
The downside is the amount of work and effort needed to make it happen, but the artisans will get it right.
