A male Nigerian nurse has questioned the practice of preventing male nurses from entering labour wards when women are giving birth, expressing concern over what he considers unequal treatment in the nursing profession.
Speaking on the issue, he said: “A woman will be in labour, and male nurses will be prevented from entering the ward. Why?”
He further questioned why male nurses are trained and equipped with the same professional knowledge as their female counterparts but are still denied access to certain hospital wards because of their gender.
According to him, male nurses undergo the same training and acquire the necessary skills to care for patients, making it difficult to understand why their gender should prevent them from carrying out certain professional duties.
His remarks have sparked conversations about gender discrimination in the healthcare sector, patient preferences and equal opportunities for male and female nurses.
