“When A Patient Cries Out, The Doctor Listens” – Atiku Replies Tinubu After Comparing Nigeria To Cancer Patient

- Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reportedly responded to President Bola Tinubu’s Independence Day address, in which the President compared Nigeria’s economic condition to a cancer patient undergoing painful treatment.
- In the statement circulating online, Atiku questioned why Nigerians are still struggling to afford food, medicine and transportation after more than three years of reforms.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reportedly responded to President Bola Tinubu’s Independence Day address, in which the President compared Nigeria’s pre-reform economy to a cancer patient undergoing painful treatment.
Tinubu, during his October 1 broadcast marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary, said the country had been like a sick patient with cancer and that his administration chose difficult reforms to address the underlying problems. He said the “side effects were real” but maintained that the reforms had improved the economy.
A statement currently circulating online and attributed to Atiku questioned the impact of the reforms on ordinary Nigerians.
It quoted him as saying: “Bola Tinubu, you call Nigeria a patient with cancer, After three years of your treatment, why is it hard for Nigerians to buy food, pay for medicine, or even get to work. Why does your government have more money why the people can afford less, you told Nigerians to endure that you’re curing the disease, but when a patient cries out, the doctor listens”
The remarks, if from Atiku, come amid an ongoing political debate over the economic policies of Tinubu’s administration and the cost of living ahead of the 2027 general election.
Atiku, who is the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, has previously called on the Federal Government and state governments to make life more affordable for Nigerians. On September 30, he said the hardship facing Nigerians required action beyond condolences.
