Yobe court sentences man to death for killing wife

A Yobe State High Court sitting in Damaturu on Wednesday sentenced a 45-year-old man, Abubakar Musa, popularly known as Daddy, to death by hanging for the killing of his wife, Ammi Adamu Mamman.
The court reportedly convicted Musa of culpable homicide after concluding that the prosecution had established his guilt beyond reasonable doubt.
Musa was arrested on January 4, 2024, following the death of his wife at New Bra-Bra Estate in Damaturu, according to reports.
The then Police Public Relations Officer of the Yobe State Police Command, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, said the incident was reported in the early hours of that day.
“The ‘C’ Divisional Police Headquarters, Damaturu, received a distress call at about 4:48 a.m. on January 4,” Abdulkarim said.
He explained that preliminary information indicated that the couple were on the same bed when Mamman was allegedly attacked with a sharp object on the neck.
“The victim sustained severe bleeding, which led to her death,” he said.
Abdulkarim added that Musa was arrested for questioning, while detectives attached to the homicide unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department launched an investigation into the incident.
Mamman’s death also attracted condemnation from her workplace and civil society organisations in Yobe State.
In a newsletter published in February 2024, Yobe State University identified Mamman as a member of its staff and disclosed that the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mala Mohammed Daura, had expressed sadness over her death.
The university said Daura called on security agencies to ensure that those responsible for the killing were brought to justice.
Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, also sympathised with Mamman’s family following her death.
He assured the family that anyone found culpable would be made to face the law.
