2027: INEC gives update on election preparations

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has disclosed that Nigeria’s National Register of Voters now contains over 103 million people, while revealing that it has completed nine of the 14 activities on its revised timetable for the 2027 general elections.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed this on Wednesday when he received the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Pete Vowles, at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Amupitan said operational readiness assessments were ongoing across the six geopolitical zones as the commission continued preparations for the elections.
He also announced that INEC was conducting a nationwide Permanent Voter Cards collection exercise across all 774 local government areas, with collection points decentralised to registration areas and wards.
The chairman further disclosed that the commission had procured 57,000 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System devices to strengthen its technological capacity ahead of the polls.
He said INEC was also preparing election materials for the country’s 176,846 polling units, alongside improved logistics and early security coordination.
The commission is seeking further cooperation with the United Kingdom in cybersecurity, training of electoral personnel, voter education, strategic communication and efforts to combat disinformation.
Amupitan reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to delivering a “free, fair, credible and inclusive 2027 General Election.”
