A 13-year-old boy has died and several others sustained injuries after a fountain collapsed during celebrations of Spain’s FIFA World Cup triumph in Ciudad Rodrigo, western Spain.
The incident occurred shortly after Spain secured their first World Cup title since 2010, with thousands of jubilant supporters taking to streets, public squares and landmarks across the country to celebrate.
In a statement posted on Facebook, the Ciudad Rodrigo City Hall expressed condolences over the tragedy.
The municipality said, “The City Hall of Ciudad Rodrigo expresses its sadness and presents its condolences for the death of a boy of 13.
“What should have been a celebration of Spain’s team in the football World Cup turned into tragedy.”
Emergency services said they received multiple distress calls shortly after 12:30 a.m. local time reporting that a fountain had collapsed on a crowd gathered around it.
“A few minutes after 12:30 a.m. local time, rescue services received calls over a fountain collapsing on numerous people,” emergency services said in a post on X, adding that another youth was also injured.
Local media reported that the structure gave way after numerous supporters climbed onto the fountain to celebrate Spain’s historic victory.
The triumph sparked widespread celebrations across Spain, with fans waving national flags, singing and gathering at public landmarks in cities nationwide.
Authorities have, however, repeatedly cautioned supporters against climbing public structures during celebrations, warning that such spontaneous gatherings can result in serious accidents and injuries.
