Ayasofya: Witness to history

Six years after reopening for worship, Istanbul’s 1,486-year-old Ayasofya Grand Mosque remains a living testament to history.

Built as a Byzantine cathedral in 537 AD, transformed into an Ottoman imperial mosque in 1453, and converted to a museum in 1934, the UNESCO World Heritage Site has witnessed the rise and fall of empires.
