Police Upgrade Complaint Response Unit, Deepen Media Partnership

The Nigeria Police Force has unveiled plans to strengthen its Complaint Response Unit (CRU) as part of renewed efforts to improve internal accountability, while also seeking closer collaboration with the media to enhance public awareness of ongoing police reforms.

The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Okokon Edem, disclosed this on Friday during a courtesy visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council in Abuja.

Describing the visit as part of his familiarisation tour since assuming office, Edem said the Force was repositioning the CRU, its flagship digital platform for receiving, tracking and resolving complaints from members of the public, to make it more responsive, transparent and efficient.

According to him, the upgraded unit will enable faster handling of complaints, improved case tracking and greater transparency in the resolution of cases involving allegations of professional misconduct, extortion, harassment and human rights violations by police personnel across the country.

He explained that the improvements align with the reform agenda of the Inspector-General of Police, who has prioritised institutional accountability and stronger public confidence in policing.

Edem also announced plans to convene a media parley involving Zone 7 Command as part of efforts to deepen engagement between the police and journalists at the zonal level.

said the initiative would provide reporters with greater insight into the Force’s ongoing reforms, thereby promoting more accurate and balanced reportage.

“Journalists are part of the police family,” Edem said, adding that informed and responsible reporting would not only help the public hold institutions accountable but also support constructive reforms within the Nigeria Police Force.

Responding, Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, welcomed the renewed emphasis on accountability and pledged the union’s support for initiatives aimed at strengthening public trust in the police.

She commended the new Force spokesperson for his openness to engagement and assured him that journalists in the territory would continue to amplify citizens’ concerns while monitoring the progress of reforms within the Force.

Ike said the media remained a critical stakeholder in promoting transparency and ensuring that public institutions remained accountable to the people.

The Complaint Response Unit serves as the Nigeria Police Force’s central platform for receiving and addressing complaints against police personnel. The latest enhancements are expected to improve responsiveness, strengthen oversight and make the complaint resolution process more transparent, reinforcing broader efforts to build public confidence in the Force through institutional reform.
